Leonard and Rose Pick Up OVC Men's Basketball Awards
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball player Adam Leonard was named 2006-07 Ohio Valley Conference Co-Freshman of the Year while sophomore Mike Rose earned second team all-conference accolades as announced by the league office today. Voting was done by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Leonard, a native of Lee’s Summitt, Mo., currently leads the OVC in three-pointers made per game (3.1) while ranking fourth in three-point field goal percentage (39.6). The guard has hit a trifecta in 28 of 30 games this season including going 6-for-6 from long range against Kentucky. Even though Leonard is a freshman, he has started all 30 games while averaging 12.2 points per game, second most on the squad. He also averages 2.5 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game. Leonard earned the OVC’s Freshman of the Week award three times during the season. Leonard and Eastern Illinois’ Romain Martin garnered an equal amount of votes and split the award for the first time since its inception in 1990-91.
Rose is Eastern’s top scorer and ranks sixth in the league at 15.0 points per game. The Chicago, Ill., native has reached the 20-point plateau nine times as a sophomore including a career-high 27 points in the win over East Tennessee State on Nov. 13. A prolific outside shooter as well, Rose tied a program record by nailing seven three-pointers at Tennessee-Martin on Dec. 20. Late in the season, the guard recorded career highs in assists (six) and steals (four) at regular season champ Austin Peay. Rose has started all 30 games this season and was one of just two sophomores to be named to the all-conference team.
This is the third time a Colonel has won the OVC Freshman of the Year award. Matt Witt earned the award most recently in 2002-03. This is also the sixth consecutive year an EKU player has been selected to the all-conference team.
The Colonels (19-11) are back in action tomorrow night, March 2, against Tennessee Tech (19-12) in the semifinals of the O’Reilly OVC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. ESPNU will be televising the game nationally beginning at 9 p.m.
