Transy’s Leach named HCAC Player of Year
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Transylvania sophomore Julie Leach has been named women’s basketball Player of the Year in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference following a vote of league coaches.
Leach, a 6-0 center from Beaver Dam, Ky. (Ohio County High School), led the HCAC in scoring (19.6 points a game) and rebounding (10.7 rebounds a game) and guided the Pioneers to a third-place regular season finish.
Transy, under head coach Greg Todd, lost in the finals of the HCAC tournament to Manchester, but received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which begins Friday. Transy takes a 19-8 record into Friday’s matchup at No. 11 DePauw.
Senior Transy guard Cindy Beavin (Brandenburg, Ky./Meade County) joined Leach on the All-HCAC first team while freshman Brittany Henderlight (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) was an honorable mention choice as well as picked for the All-Freshman squad.
Manchester’s Josh Dzurick was named coach of the year while Mandy White, a forward from Defiance, was the league’s top freshman.
Beavin scored 10 points a game for the Pioneers and led the HCAC in assists with 5.5 a game. Henderlight was the team’s third-leading scorer at 9.5 points a game and shot 37.7 percent from three-point range.
