Lexington, Ky. (October 6, 2009) – The Gay Brewer, Jr. Course at Picadome continues to attract prestigious golf events, having been selected recently as a qualifying venue for the 8th Annual Collegiate Golf Alliance (CGA) National Collegiate Golf Championship.
Collegiate Golf Alliance and The PGA of America have partnered to further promote golf on college campuses. With the PGA’s new Play Golf America University Program and CGA’s National Collegiate Golf Championship, golfers of all levels can get in the game.
Since being launched, The PGA of America has distributed $7.3 million to 76 participating colleges and universities throughout the United States, including $6.1 million on behalf of members of U.S. Ryder Cup Teams as a means to support this initiative. Through 2008, PGA Professionals have provided instruction to more than 27,000 college students through Play Golf America University. Through the donation of Ryder Cup member J.B. Holmes, University of Kentucky will be hosting a Local Qualifier Tournament and sending a student team with all expenses paid to the National Championship.
"It's quite an honor for our facility to be involved in such high profile events," said Jeff Shelton, Head PGA Professional of the Gay Brewer, Jr. Course at Picadome. "It says a lot about the caliber of the Gay Brewer, Jr. Course and the appreciation that tournament organizers have for the challenge it offers. We're very proud to be associated with the CGA National Collegiate Golf Championship, and are happy to support the entire university population of golfers from students to alumni."
May through October, the Gay Brewer, Jr. Course, along with 50+ other Local Qualifier hosts will be qualifying teams in three divisions for the National Collegiate Golf Championship, an annual competition to determine the top two-person amateur golf team in America. The national finals, covered by Fox Sports West, will be held on November 6 – 8, 2009, at Silverstone Golf Club in Las Vegas. Qualifying teams in three divisions, student, faculty/staff and alumni/community, will advance into the National Championship. Travel stipends and national entry support are available depending on total Local Qualifier participation. A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit charitable golf initiatives including support of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Foundation.
More information on the Local Qualifier is available by contacting Nick DeMarchi, Tournament Director, at (859) 257-2898 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration and information is also available at http://www.cgagolflinks.com/tournament_detail.asp?tournament_id=885.
“The thrill of representing and competing for your university is now available to thousands of students and alumni. The opportunity to advance and compete for a National Championship is a tremendous experience and a memory that will last a lifetime,” stated CGA’s President and CEO Mike Munson.
Sponsors of the event include FRS, NIKE Golf, Golfsmith, Golf Digest, Cutter & Buck, American Hole in One, Advantage Fitness Products, Oakley, and Matrix Fitness. To provide additional resources, CGA has appointed six regional managers to assist in the programming of campus golf events as well as help coordinate the National Tournament.
