Marcavelly Wins First Spring Stakes Race

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Bill Mott trainee Marcavelly got stakes
racing at Keeneland off to a dynamic start on opening day when he
won the $150,000 Central Bank Transylvania for Zayat Stables on
"This horse has a good turn of foot," Mott said. "Once he got
rolling, he took off."
Under jockey Edgar Prado, the 3-year-old son of Johannesburg was
sixth at the start. He inched up to third on the backside and made
his move in the upper stretch, when he went to the front four wide
to take the lead from tiring front-runners Royal War Academy and
"He came out of the gate slow, but that may have been the best
thing that happened to him," Prado said. "He rated very kindly."
A $210,000 Keeneland September sales purchase in 2005,
3-year-old Marcavelly has three wins and two seconds for lifetime
earnings of $227,480. He ran one mile on the turf in 1:36.98,
winning by 3½ lengths and paying $6.40, $4 and $3.
In Jest paid $7 and $4.80 to place under Cornelio Velasquez, and
Cobrador returned $4 with Garrett Gomez. Sedgefield, second-place
finisher to Derby hopeful Hard Spun in the Lane's End at Turfway
Park and the favorite in the field of nine, faded to fourth after
dueling for the early lead.
"The horse broke good, but he never relaxed like the last
time," said Sedgefield's jockey, Rafael Bejarano. "I tried to get
him to feel comfortable, but he wanted to go to the lead. He was
pretty good, but not like last time."
Earlier in the day, 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide was
unable to break a three-race losing streak and finished seventh in
a field of nine in a $67,000 race.
The gelded son of Distorted Humor was in third under Velasquez
for the first half of the 1 1-16-mile test for 4-year-olds and
older. But he tired on the backside and faded by the time the field
hit the far turn.
Funny Cide was making his first start for trainer Barclay Tagg
since October and looking for his first win since July.
Rathor, with Kent Desormeaux aboard, won the race, paying
$14.60, $7.80 and $5.60.
