Quarterback Morgan Newton has been chosen as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Newton, a true freshman from Carmel, Ind., completed 20 of 29 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns, all career highs, as Kentucky defeated Eastern Kentucky, 37-12. Newton led a balanced attack, with more than 200 yards rushing and passing, as UK generated 444 yards total offense. Newton guided the team into scoring territory on six of the seven possessions he played.
Newton is the sixth Wildcat to earn a player-of-the-week honor from the SEC this season, along with Trevard Lindley (Defensive POW vs. Miami), Derrick Locke (Special Teams POW vs. Louisville), Corey Peters (D-Lineman POW vs. South Carolina), Micah Johnson (Defensive POW vs. Auburn) and Jorge Gonzalez (O-Lineman POW vs. ULM).
