Travis Jones had four hits, including a
home run, to lead South Carolina to an 8-1 win over Kentucky on
The Gamecocks (34-13, 12-10 Southeastern Conference) had 12
hits. Justin Smoak had two hits and hit his 15th home run of the
season, while James Darnell and Steven Reinhold also added two
South Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the first after Jones led off
with a double and came home on a double by Darnell. Jones put the
Gamecocks up 2-0 with a solo home run in the third.
South Carolina scored five runs in the sixth, including a
three-run homer by Smoak.
The Wildcats (30-14-1, 9-12-1) only had three hits, two of them
by Antone DeJesus. They scored their only run in the fourth on a
sacrifice fly by Brian Spear.
Kentucky did loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but
reliever Curtis Johnson retired the next two batters to end the
Gamecocks starter Arik Hempy (5-1) allowed two hits and an
unearned run, while striking out 10 and walking two to get the win.
Wildcats starter Chris Rusin (4-3) allowed 10 hits and seven
runs, six of them earned, striking out five and walking three in
five innings to pick up the loss.
