Transy Golf Opens Play in NCAA

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Transylvania’s men’s golf team will be in the field for the first time in the NCAA Division III Championships when play begins Tuesday at the Hawthorns Country Club in Fishers, Ind.
The 72-hole event is hosted by Anderson University. After play on Tuesday and Wednesday at Hawthorns, the final two rounds will move to the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
The Pioneers are coached by Brian Lane and enter the event ranked 16th in the country after reaching the top 10 earlier this year. Transy made the 35-team field by earning the Heartland Conference title, which comes with an automatic invitation.
A total of 180 golfers will compete this week, including 24 automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large berths. In addition, the top five individuals from teams that did not qualify for the field were included. The field will be cut to 24 teams after 36 holes.
“After the success we have enjoyed the last two years, particularly this year, playing in the NCAA Championships is a nice reward for our players,” Lane said. “I think this solidifies us as an up-and-coming program in Division III, a perennial top 20 golf program.”
The Pioneers are led by four juniors, Matt Scott (LaCenter, Ky.), Corey Maggard (London, Ky.), Greg Turcotte (West Bloomfield, Mich.), and Alex Rectin (Villa Hills, Ky.), and sophomore Bradley Sutherland (Cadiz, Ky.) All five finished in the top 10 in the HCAC Championships with Scott, Maggard, and Turcotte in the top five.
Nebraska Wesleyan won the team title last year with a 10-shot victory over Redlands. Rochester’s Stephen Goodridge was the medalist at plus five 289.
