In a thrilling seesaw Indianapolis 500,
Scotland's Dario Franchitti (fran-KEET'-ee) won in a rain-shortened
race after 166 of 200 scheduled laps. He's the first Scotsman to
win the Indy 500 since Jimmy Clark in 1965.
Officials called the race after 415 of the scheduled 500 miles.
Scott Dixon finishing second and Helio Castroneves
(kas-troh-NEH'-ves) third at the Brickyard. Sam Hornish Junior and
Ryan Briscoe round out the top five.
There were nine different leaders and 24 lead changes.
Tony Kanaan (kuh-NAHN') led the race after a three-hour rain
delay. But he dropped to 12th after a pit stop and a near-collision
with Jaques Lazier (luh-ZHEER'), who hit the wall in front of him.
Kanaan had worked his way to the front again before a crash by
Marty Roth.
Kanaan and teammate Danica Patrick headed back to the pits again
for what they hoped would be their final stops before the end of
the race. That gave the lead to Franchitti. Just after the restart,
Lazier hit the wall, and Kanaan spun his car sideways to avoid
Lazier. Shortly after that, another crash took out Marco Andretti.
Then, the rain started falling again, ending the race after 166 of
the scheduled 200 laps.
