Shelby Returns Home

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former Kentucky baseball standout and Lexington native John Shelby returns home on Tuesday evening as his minor league team, the Kannapolis Intimidators, begin a four-game series with the Lexington Legends at Applebee’s Park.

Shelby, who was drafted as a junior in the fifth round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox, is an everyday player for the Intimidators, seeing time at second base, shortstop, and in the outfield. Shelby is batting for a .276 average in 72 games for the White Sox Class-A affiliate Kannapolis, driving in 29 runs, ripping five triples, 25 doubles, and four home runs. The speedy 5-foot-10, 185-pounder has swiped 14 bases in 17 attempts.

In 2006, Shelby was apart of the most successful Kentucky baseball team in the 103-year history of the program, leading the team to the first Southeastern Conference Championship in school history. While playing second base for the Wildcats in 2006, Shelby boosted 18 home runs, batted .291, and drove in 56. As a fifth-round pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, Shelby joined fellow Wildcat Ryan Strieby as the highest drafted UK duo since 1994.

Game time between the Legends and the Intimidators on Tuesday-Saturday is set for 7:05 p.m. at Applebee’s park.
