Scott Co. opens Girls Sweet 16 with win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Kristen Stainback scored a team-high
22 points in Scott County's 65-54 victory over Belfry in the first
round of Kentucky high school girls' state tournament.
The 11th Region champion Lady Cardinals (24-6) controlled the
tempo of the game from the opening tip, pushing the ball up the
court continuously against the much smaller Lady Pirates (27-7)
throughout the game. Scott County used its superior athleticism to
get constant penetration to the basket.
Belfry, the 15th Region winner, was able to pull to within three
points at 54-51 with 5:56 left in the fourth quarter after Jackelyn
Stack entered the game and scored eight of the Lady Pirates' next
10 points. The Lady Cardinals came back with a 9-2 run.
Madisen Webb scored 12 points and Tereka Guyn added 11 points
and eight rebounds for the Lady Cardinals. Jillnell Bevins scored a
game-high 24 points for Belfry.
Scott County will take on Boone County in the quarterfinals
Friday.
