BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Juliann Miller scored 23 points and
Mercy defeated Scott County 71-61 to win the 2010 Kentucky state
girls high school championship Saturday night.
It is Mercy's first state championship since 1992.
Leading 35-32, the Jaguars (27-6) took control of the game in
the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Cardinals 20-13. Scott
County (26-7) was not able to cut the lead below six after the
Mercy held on by making 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth
The Jaguars outrebounded Scott County 47-35 for the game, with
20 boards coming on the offensive side.
Mercy had two other players in double figures as Ellen Sholtes
scored 16 and Malisa Cruz chipped in 15 and a game-high 12
Kristen Stainback scored 16 of her 26 points in the second half,
but it was not enough for the Lady Cardinals.
