Evening Jewel takes Ashland Stakes

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Evening Jewel held on to win the Ashland
Stakes, Keeneland's major prep race for the Kentucky Oaks.
The filly, trained by James Cassidy, moved to the front on the
rail under jockey Kent Desormeaux. She never led by more than a
length but held off a ferocious stretch run by fast-charging It's
Tea Time, winning by a neck.
Favorite She Be Wild, the champion 2-year-old filly, is now
winless in two starts at age 3. She never challenged for the lead,
finishing third.
Negligee, who beat She Be Wild at the Keeneland track in
October, faded to seventh in the eight-horse field.
Evening Jewel paid $12.60, $6.80 and $4.40. It's Tea Time
returned $15.40 and $6.80. She Be Wild was $3.40 to show.
