Former Wildcats, Local Players Cut by NFL Teams

The deadline for NFL teams to trim their rosters to the 53-man limit was Saturday. Several Kentucky players were casualties of those roster moves.

Former Wildcats Shane Boyd, Artose Pinner and Arliss Beach were all cut from their respective teams, as were former local high school players Travis Leffew and Eric Shelton.

Boyd was the third-string quarterback in Arizona, but was released after the Cardinals decided to keep just two quarterbacks.

Pinner, who ran for 125 yards and three TDs in a game last December, was released by the Vikings. The former Hopkinsville star spent four seasons in the NFL, including his first three with Detroit.

Beach, who played at Ashland, was in camp earlier this summer with Green Bay before being released. The Cowboys brought the running back in for a workout, then invited him to training camp.

Leffew was an integral part of Boyle Co.’s successful run to five-straight state titles. Leffew played along side brother Bobby at Louisville. The younger Leffew was cut by the Packers.

And running back Eric Shelton, a second-round draft pick by Carolina in 2005, played his high school football at Bryan Station, and was regarded as one of the top prep players in the country. After playing a year at Florida State, Shelton transferred to Louisville, where he played two seasons, before entering the draft after his junior season.
