RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University senior Anthony Brown was selected to The Sports Network’s FCS preseason All-America third team Monday. He was one of eight OVC football players to make the prestigious list.
Brown is a two-time first team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection. The native of Cincinnati, Ohio started all 11 games last year for Eastern Kentucky at outside linebacker. He ranked second in the league in tackles for loss (12.5) and tied for the conference lead in forced fumbles (three). Brown’s career numbers for tackles (191) and sacks (12.5) are the most by any active EKU player.
The Sports Network FCS preseason All-America team consists of 98 players over three teams. The Missouri Valley Football Conference led all conferences with 17 selections.
The 2013 Sports Network All-America team will be announced after the regular season in mid-December.
The Sports Network also presents the four major awards in the division – the Walter Payton (FCS outstanding player), the Buck Buchanan (FCS outstanding defensive player), the Jerry Rice (FCS outstanding freshman player) and the Eddie Robinson (FCS coach of the year) – after the season. In addition, TSN presents the FCS’s most widely recognized weekly top-25 poll and weekly awards honoring the nation’s top offensive player, defensive player, special teams player and freshman.
The most recent Colonel to earn first team All-America status from The Sports Network was placekicker Taylor Long following the 2008 season.
EKU kicks off the 2013 schedule with a Thursday night home opener against Robert Morris on Aug. 29. This will mark the first season opener at home and on a Thursday night since 1993.
