LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK coach Mark Stoops says quarterback Drew Barker has a back injury and its an issue that's been lingering since last summer.
"We’ll see how the week goes on." said Stoops at his weekly Monday news conference. "I’m in no position to talk about that right now. He had an MRI. He’s gonna consult with our doctors and some specialists and we’ll get to the bottom of it and see what’s best for him.”
On his weekly radio show Monday night, Stoops said Barker will see a specialist Wednesday. He said it would have to be a "miraculous recovery" for Barker to return to practice healed and ready to go Wednesday.
Barker was hit on the second play of the game against New Mexico State Saturday but Stoops described how the back injury has lingered.
"He's had some issues that were lingering, so it's not just one hit. So if you look at the hit it doesn't look anything too much, but I think you put that and compound it on some of the back problems that he's had, even going back to last week at Florida. He had a few issues come up in the summer, a couple things were bothering him. Some of this is chronic."
Junior college transfer Stephen Johnson replaced Barker Saturday and completed 17 of 22 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson also ran for 51 yards.
