Boyd grateful for opportunity to start against Kent State

Senior Aaron Boyd will get the start alongside La'Rod King at wide receiver when the Wildcats host Kent State this Saturday.

Before seeing action on Sunday against Louisville, Boyd had played in just 18 games. His six receptions resulted in 51 yards. Boyd is still searching for his first career touchdown.

"He'll be a starter," coach Joker Phillips announced on Tuesday. "Other guys will play, but Aaron deserves to start."

Against Louisville, Boyd caught three passes for 36 yards. His coach saluted his improved play and attitude on and off the field.

"He does a better job at blocking. And that's being unselfish," Phillips said. "Therefore, he's doing all the little things we're expecting of him. He's shut his mouth and started to play."

Boyd wouldn't elaborate, but hinted he had to change the way he approached life and football.

"I had to focus on Aaron being a football player, instead of being a cool guy," Boyd said. "I just had to figure out what was important in life."

"He's grown up a lot. He's a lot more mature. He handles his business the right way," Phillips added. "I'm so proud of him."

Boyd isn't the fastest Wildcat, but he's making the most of his opportunity. His position coach sees the difference.

"Shoot man, he played fast in the game," Pat Washington said. "I was watching the tape and I thought it was E.J (Fields) or (DeMarcus) Sweat. I was like, 'this is freaking Aaron.'"

Boyd is thrilled, but says he's taking nothing for granted.

"Just because I'm starting doesn't mean I'm content. I want to keep on getting better. It's something that has to happen every day. I'll keep on working every day."

And Boyd says he's thrilled for the chance to contribute.

"I can't believe I'm playing again. It hasn't hit me. I can't describe it. I'm just grateful for this opportunity. I'm excited to play."
