LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK coach John Calipari is working individually with freshman Alex Poythress to improve his game. Calipari worked with Poythress Sunday and Monday and said he told Poythress, "I'm proud of you."
Calipari said it was a 38 minute workout Sunday but only a 27 minute workout Monday. Poythress was not breaking down as much and a key part of it is mental. "You can't break down when you just feel that you're tired. So any time that he breaks down he has to go again on the stuff that we're doing. It's all stuff relative to him."
Calipari said this is what he did with NBA players when they were injured. He said he would personally work them out and until they made it through the workout, he wouldn't let them play in a game.
Calipari said players would have better numbers than before they were injured and he's hoping to achieve this with Poythress. "He was way better today than he was yesterday, it wasn't close."
Calipari said Poythress is still not all the way there and he's still not ready to play a game. "Now we've got to go in the next few days, we'll see where he goes and we have time before our next game and we'll see where he goes."
Calipari said he is doing the same thing with Archie Goodwin and Ryan Harrow prior to paractice. He's also working with Kyle Wiltjer to get tougher.
Kentucky returns to the court Wednesday night against Eastern Michigan in Rupp Arena. Tipoff will be at 6:00p.m. on ESPNU. The Cats do not open SEC play until January 10 at Vanderbilt.
