Calvin Bird dies at 75

Calvin Bird, one of the most versatile players in UK football history is dead at the age of 75.

Playing under Blanton Collier from 1958-1960, Bird excelled as a running back, receiver, defensive back, kickoff returner and punt returner. He led the Wildcats in receiving and all purpose yards three straight years. Bird led the SEC in receiving in 1958. He was named All-SEC in 1958 and 1959.

Calvin Bird was one of the four Bird brothers from Corbin, Kentucky who played sports at UK. Older brother Jerry is a retired jersey honoree in basketball. Younger brother Rodger has a retired jersey in football.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 23, at the Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Kingsport, Tenn. starting at 2 p.m. A memorial service and reception is scheduled Saturday, June 29 at Central Baptist Church in Corbin, from 3-5 p.m.
