LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Prolific slugger Jose Canseco will face a trio from WKYT on Friday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in what is being billed as the Jose Canseco Home Run Challenge.
Canseco, who hit 462 career home runs in 17 big league seasons, will also face eight fans, who will be randomly selected. The event is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., before the Lexington Legends host Hagerstown.
"It's funny because this is my addiction, baseball," Canseco said. "I just really can't let it go. I have been playing it since I was a little kid."
Canseco teamed up with another power hitter, Mark McGwire, to form the Bash Brothers while both played in Oakland. There, Canseco led the American League in home runs in 1988 with 42. He also stole 40 bases that season, becoming the first man ever to record 40 homers and 40 steals in a season.
Canseco was the AL MVP in 1988.
Lexington is part of a 17-city tour, during which Canseco hopes to set a world record for the longest home run.
"It brings back a lot of memories and it's a lot of fun," he told WKYT on Thursday. "You get to meet the fans. You get to see the sights and sounds of it, and you get to compete against other players and fans too."
"I'm kind of like an adrenaline junkie, believe it or not. When I was playing, I remember the World Series and playoffs. You're playing in front of 50,000 people and you've got millions of people watching. Your adrenaline is pumping. That, I think, keeps you young and keeps you going."
WKYT on-air personalities Whitney Wetzel, Brian Milam and Micah Harris will face Canseco in the home run derby.
