LEXINGTON, kY. (WKYT) - After a break of seven days, the Kentucky Wildcats will return to the court Saturday afternoon against Lipscomb. Coach John Calipari sees progress with his young team but says his players must be accountable.
Over the last two weeks Calipari put in tougher practices and early morning conditioning. If any mistakes are made he wants his players to get on each other. "We need that, they need to start, quit looking at us and start coaching each other. But this is all part of a process."
Every season hes coached at UK, Calipari has said his team is too quiet. He says this one is especially quiet. Calipari admired the communication at both ends of the floor as he watched the Clippers and the Bobcats play Wednesday night in Charlotte. He said he came home and communicated that to his players Thursday. He wants them to know not being vocal is a form of selfishness. "You're more worried about yourself than anybody else on the floor, 'I'm just worried about where I'm suppose to be.' Well that's what we're trying to break down."
Point guard Ryan Harrow says any mistakes have to be pointed out and not let go. He believes he's getting better. "I'm trying to, I'm not that mean type of guy that checks somebody." He agrees he has to be mean.
Calipari again called on his players to put in more time in the gym on their own and this is the perfect time with semester break. He hopes results will come in games. "We're getting better, but you've got to go and perform on the basketball court."
Tipoff for Kentucky and Samford is set for 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
