Cousino, Reed named to Golden Spikes list

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky junior centerfielder Austin Cousino and junior left-handed pitcher/first baseman A.J. Reed have been named to the midseason watch list for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, it was announced on Thursday afternoon.

Cousino and Reed are among the 50 players on the midseason watch list, the most prestigious award in the nation which is annually given to the top player in amateur baseball.

Cousino and Reed on the listing mark the third consecutive season a UK player has earned a spot on the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Watch List, as Trevor Gott and Luke Maile were on the 2012 Golden Spikes mid-season watch list and Cousino and Corey Littrell were on the preseason watch list in 2013. Cousino, Reed and right-hander Kyle Cody were named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List.

Reed, the midseason player of the year by Perfect Game, is putting together the best season of any player in the nation, leading the SEC in nearly every category as UK’s Friday night starter and No. 3 or No. 4 hitter. Reed has hit .373 with a .500 on-base and a .771 slugging percentage, ranking as the only player from a BCS conference with seven or more homers. Reed has nine doubles, one triple, 12 homers and 41 RBI, while owning a 6-1 record and a 1.93 ERA on the mound. Reed is 4-0 against top-12 teams on the mound, including wins over No. 1 Virginia, No. 1 South Carolina, No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 12 Florida. In his career, Reed – a first-team preseason All-America selection – has hit .308 with 26 doubles, three triples, 29 homers and 136 ERA, owning a 13-12 record with a 3.00 ERA on the mound in 192 innings.

Cousino, a native of Dublin, Ohio, has hit .348 in 2014, with 10 doubles, two triples, three homers and 25 RBI, stealing 12-of-12 bases. A two-time member of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and a third-team preseason All-American, Cousino has hit .302 in his 150-game career, with 42 doubles, five triples, 18 homer, 93 RBI and 41 steals.
