LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK quarterback Drew Barker is now in a position to lead heading into the 2016 season. Speaking at Friday's UK Kickoff Luncheon at Commonwealth Stadium, UK quarterback coach Darrin Hinshaw said Barker developed as a leader in spring practice.
"He was not in a position where he was going to be able to lead this football team," said Hinshaw. "So we had to change, you have to change what your mindset is, everything, from the moment we got here. And he's done that. He really has. I said to be a leader, you got to be a leader all the time. Not just on the field, but off the field. It's been really a pleasure to see him embrace that."
Barker will be under a lot of pressure when the season opens against Southern Mississippi September 3. Hinshaw has no doubt he'll be ready to lead the Kentucky offense.
"He's ready to go," said Hinshaw. "You know, he's anxious. He wants to go out there and prove he's the quarterback that'll lead this team. We're excited about that. All I tell him right now, let's just worry about the first play against Southern Miss. That's all we've got to worry about. Take all that other stuff and don't read the papers. Just get ready to go play one snap. Then we'll go to the next step after that."
