RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team has accepted a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Colonels (24-9) will play at Gardner-Webb University (21-12) on Tuesday.
The game in Boiling Springs, N.C., is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.
“This team has had a very good season,” head coach Jeff Neubauer said. “They have accomplished a lot that very few, and in some case no EKU team has. I’m excited that these players will be rewarded by getting an opportunity to play in a postseason tournament.”
This is Eastern’s first postseason appearance since playing in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in 2010 and third postseason trip in the last eight years. EKU lost to the College of Charleston in the CBI. The Colonels played in the NCAA Tournament in 2007.
“Gardner-Webb will certainly be a challenge for us,” said Neubauer. “They know how to win. GWU has 21 wins and a second place finish in their conference. Playing on their home court is not going to be an easy task.”
The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament was created in 2009. What began as a 16-team event, quickly expanded to 24 teams in 2011 and is now a 32-team postseason tournament, with invitations extended only to teams outside of the BCS power conferences.
Second-round CIT games will be played March 22-24, quarterfinal games March 26-27 and semifinal games March 29-30. The championship game will be played on April 2.
Gardner-Webb had the second-best record in the Big South Conference at 11-5. Charleston Southern and High Point each finished 12-4. The Colonels beat High Point on the road, 73-70, on Dec. 21. Eastern also beat Big South-member Radford, 83-75, at home earlier this season.
