EKU's Cosey named to All-OVC team

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University junior Corey Walden was chosen as the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year and senior Glenn Cosey was selected first team All-OVC, the league announced today.

Walden is the first Colonel to earn the Defensive Player of the Year honor which was first awarded in 2008-09. Cosey is the 55th first team all-conference selection in program history.

The duo has helped lead EKU to its winningest two-year stretch in program history. Last season the Colonels won a school-record 25 games. With 20 more wins this season, the team broke the previous mark of 42 wins combined in 1945-46 and 1946-47.

Walden was a key factor in Eastern Kentucky leading the OVC in scoring defense (70.0 ppg) and scoring margin (+8.7 points/game). The junior, who is often given the task of defending the other team’s best guard, finished second in the conference with 62 steals (2.1 spg), just three behind the leader. Overall, Walden had at least one steal in 26 of EKU's 30 games on the year and had 20 total steals over the team's last eight contests. As a team Eastern Kentucky ranks fifth nationally with 262 steals, 62 of which belong to Walden.

The Daytona Beach, Fla., native averaged 13.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

Cosey, a member of the OVC All-Newcomer team last season, averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in 2013-14. He leads the conference in three-pointers made (3.3 per game), is second in assists-to-turnover ratio (2.4), third in free throw shooting (85.1 percent), fourth in scoring, fourth in three-point shooting (42.2 percent) and eighth in assists (4.3 apg).

On Jan. 2, Cosey broke the Eastern Kentucky record and tied the OVC mark with 10 three-pointers at Eastern Illinois. He went 11-of-14 from the field, including 10-of-12 from behind the arc, to finish with a career-best 34 points. Cosey dished out a career-high nine assists twice this season.

On Feb. 1, Cosey banked in a 35-footer with 0.4 seconds left to give EKU a 79-78 victory over Southeast Missouri. The shot completed a comeback from 10 points down with 3:57 left and earned the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter’s Top-10 Plays.

In his last regular season home game, Cosey scored his 1,000th point in two seasons as a Colonel, becoming the school’s 32nd member of the 1,000-point club.

The Flint, Mich., native scored in double figures 29 of the team’s 30 games and eclipsed the 20-point mark 13 times.
