Georgetown College fishing team among the nation's best

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – With a 5th-place finish on Sept. 10 at Carlyle Lake in Carlyle, IL., Georgetown College took over the No. 1 ranking in the Boat U.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Series last week.

More than 160 teams, representing colleges and universities across the country, make up the series. The Tigers compete in the Central Conference.

It’s mostly a family affair at Georgetown. Rex Huff coaches the Tigers. His daughter, Haley, is a freshman team member. Her teammates include a brother, Mike Huff, a cousin Nick Huff, John Hunter, Vincent Timperio and Lauren Kelly. Senior Clay Elliott is the team president.

“The first year we were in the top 20 in every tournament,” Elliott said. “The second year, we made the top 10. This year, we’ve been in the top five in just about every tournament we’ve been in.”

Elliott started the fishing team at Georgetown in 2010 after an injury cut short his football career with the Tigers.

“The competitive soul didn’t have anything to do,” he explained. “I knew my cousins and their buddy were coming up next year, so I said, ‘We fish all the time. College fishing is getting huge, so let’s start a team.’”

“They’ve always been consistent,” Rex Huff said. “That’s why they’re number one. They’ve just worked really hard.”

Mike Huff says other students on the Georgetown campus have heard about the team’s No. 1 ranking and have taken notice.

“They say, ‘Wow, you all are ranked number in the country? Is that the NAIA?’ he said. “No, it’s out of the entire country. It’s crazy right now.”

Four regular season qualifying events are held in each conference – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southern and Western – the top five teams from each event qualify for one of five conference championships. The top five teams from each conference championship advance to the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship, which is scheduled for April, 2013.
