Gillispie enters Mayo Clinic, Walker in charge

Updated: Wed 12:08 AM, Sep 12, 2012

Texas Tech basketball coach Billy Gillispie checked himself into the Mayo Clinic Tuesday where he told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal he's being treated for stress, high blood pressure, "amongst other things.” This came in a text message. Back in Lubbock assistant Chris Walker was put in charge of the program.

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt put out a statement saying Walker is not getting an "interim" tag but he's in chage until Gillispie's status is known.

In the text message to the Avalanche-Journal Gillispie said he was in the "testing stage" and he was not sure how long his treatment will last. Hocutt said he hopes Gillispie has a full recovery but, " we cannot wait forever as we have a basketball team that starts practice soon."

Gillispie was scheduled to meet with Hocutt August 31 as allegations of player mistreatment began to swirl.
