LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Some high schools have delayed the start of their football games on Friday night due to a heat advisory.

Storms are also causing problems. A game at Dunbar High School in Lexington had a delay because of lightning in the area.

Danville High School's season-opening game against Russell County was pushed back an hour due to the high temperatures. The game is being played in Campbellsville, where the heat index was expected to climb near 100 degrees.

Mercer County High School's football game in Bowling Green has also been pushed back one hour due to the forecast. Bath County High School's football game against Paris has also been delayed.

Kentucky's High School Athletic Association sent a notice around to schools on Friday to remind coaches of the organization's heat policies.

KHSAA says that some athletes may not be "properly acclimatized to wearing of gear in hot weather."

On Friday night, schools will have to take permissible heat time-outs if temperatures reach 80 degrees or higher. WKYT's chief meteorologist Chris Bailey says that temperatures for kick-off across much of the state will exceed 80 degrees.

KHSAA says that the Heat Index Policy requires a mandatory break for at least 10 minutes for every 30 minutes of playing time, if the heat index is 95 degrees.

KHSAA says that management for the home team is responsible for monitoring the heat levels.

In 2008, a Kentucky high school football player died after collapsing in the hot weather. Max Gilpin, 15, was practicing in 94 degree heat at Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville. Another player also collapsed during that practice.
