John C. Owens, legendary amatuer dies

Johnny Owens, the best amateur player Kentucky ever produced, passed away Sunday at the age of 85.

Owens was raised in Lexington and as a student at Henry Clay won the State High School Championship twice. Moving on to the University of Kentucky he added the individual SEC Championship. Owens went on to win the State Amateur title twice and the State Senior Amatuer four times.

In his career Owens played in the Masters, two U.S. Opens and in 1984 won the British Senior Amateur.

In June 2011, the Kentucky Amatuer Player of the Year Award was named in honor of Owens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5pm-8pm at Milward Funeral Home on North Broadway in Lexington. Owens funeral will be Thursday at 2pm at Christ the king cathedral.
