Lexington, Ky. (WKYT) - The Kansas City Royals have named infielder D.J. Burt and pitcher Emilio Ogando as Player and Pitcher of the Year for the Lexington Legends. The Legends are the class A affiliate of the Royals.
Burt, 20, led the Legends in games played (125), hits (122), runs batted in (59), triples (five), runs scored (74), walks (51) and stolen bases (43). He tied for second in the South Atlantic League in stolen bases and was fourth in runs scored.
Burt had a 12-game hitting streak from June 14-28, during which he had 20 hits in 51 at bats, a .392 average. On August 10 against Asheville, he had four hits in four at bats, including a grand slam and five runs batted in.
Burt was the Royals’ fourth-round pick in the 2014 first-year player draft.
Ogando, 23, a left-hander, led the Legends in innings pitched with 132 and two-thirds, and strikeouts with 130 on his way to a 7-10 record and an earned run average of 3.80. He appeared in 25 games, starting 20. At Charleston July 30, he allowed one hit and no runs in six and two-thirds innings in a 6-1 Legends victory.
Ogando, a 12th-round pick by Kansas City in 2014, represented the Legends in the 2016 South Atlantic League All-Star game, which was played at Whitaker Bank Ballpark June 21. He pitched one scoreless inning.
“D.J. and Emilio were leaders all season long for the Legends,” said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea. “It was great to have them with us, and they are very deserving of these awards.”
The Royals named a Pitcher and Player of the Year for each of their affiliates, and all of those players will be recognized at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City Friday night, when the Royals hold Futures Night ceremonies before their game against Cleveland.
