MSU announces Courtney transfer from LSU

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Jalen Courtney, who has spent the past three seasons at Southeastern Conference member LSU, has signed an athletic scholarship agreement with the Morehead State men’s basketball program. He will sit out in 2013-14 and be eligible to play in 2014-15.

“We’re excited about Jalen because he already has three years of high-level Division I experience,” Head Coach Sean Woods said. “He’s a mature player with an athletic body. Jalen can score in multiple ways, he’s a good rebounder and his defensive ability will certainly help us.”

Courtney, a 6-foot-8 post player, played in 51 career games at LSU. He averaged 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Tigers in 2012-13. Courtney tallied career highs of 14 points and seven rebounds.

A native of Jackson, Miss., Courtney averaged 16.0 points and 11.0 rebounds as a senior at Provine High School. He helped his prep team to two 5A state championships and one runner-up finish.

Courtney was named the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior. The McDonald’s All-America nominee also earned all-state and all-metro accolades.

“Jalen brings a lot of versatility to the table and runs the floor well for someone of his size and length,” Woods added. “Jalen will be able to play small forward, power forward or center. He will push our guys in practice this year (2013-14) and will be ready to go the following season (2014-15).”
