MOREHEAD, Ky. - More than 1,000 fans rolled into Johnson Arena on Thursday evening for a preview of the 2012-13 Morehead State men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The free event featured team scrimmages, a three-point shooting competition and dunk contest.
Senior Devon Atkinson won the three-point shootout, while classmate Milton Chavis was victorious in the dunk competition. Head Women’s Coach Tom Hodges gave fans a preview of his team, while Head Men’s Coach Sean Woods also addressed the crowd.
The men return six letterwinners from a season ago and have added 13 newcomers for the 2012-13 campaign. Junior Drew Kelly, who tallied 10+ points on 17 occasions last season, is Morehead State’s top returning scorer at 10.8 per contest.
The men, who finished third in the Ohio Valley Conference last season, have played in two of the past four NCAA Tournaments. The Eagles have also won 86 percent (50-8) of their home games during the stretch, including 91 percent (32-3) in league play.
“It was terrific to see so many Eagle fans tonight,” Woods said. “I want Johnson Arena to be the toughest place to play in the OVC this season. Our young men should be a lot of fun to watch. We have a nice mix of quality returnees and talented newcomers.”
The women return nine letterwinners from 2011-12. The Eagles finished 10-19 overall, but four losses came in overtime and five more setbacks came by less than 10 points.
The women are without any seniors this year, but sophomore Almesha Jones is ready to lead a talented group of returnees. Jones reached the 10-point plateau in seven of her final 11 games a year ago and averaged double figures over her last 14 contests.
“Tonight was a great turnout for my third Morehead Hysteria,” Hodges said. “There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm in the building. We appreciate the support this community gives our program, and we look forward to seeing Eagle fans throughout the season.”
