Morehead St. finalizes schedule

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State has finalized its 2012-13 men’s basketball schedule. The 31-game slate features 13 dates against postseason teams from a year ago, including eight-time NCAA national champion Kentucky.

Game times will be announced via MSUEagles.com in the near future.

“We definitely have our work cut out for us with this challenging schedule, but that’s OK,” MSU Head Coach Sean Woods said. “My teams at Mississippi Valley State played very tough schedules -- and that won’t change at Morehead State.”

The Eagles have eight non-conference games against 2012 postseason squads, including NCAA Tournament participants LIU Brooklyn (Nov. 9), Kentucky (Nov. 21), Norfolk State (Nov. 26) and Southern Mississippi (Dec. 28).

The night before Thanksgiving, MSU faces the defending national champions at Rupp Arena. Then, three days after Christmas, the Eagles welcome former Head Coach Donnie Tyndall and his assistants back to Johnson Arena.

Morehead State’s non-conference campaign includes trips to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland (Nov. 12) and a to-be-determined site for the annual BracketBusters game (Feb. 23).

The Eagles also have dates with 2012 postseason participants Marshall (Nov. 28), North Dakota State (Dec. 5 & 21) and Indiana State (Dec. 8) prior to the Ohio Valley Conference season.

“I talk about playing anyone, at any time, using any location -- and that’s what we’re doing,” Woods said. “Our strong non-conference schedule will help our RPI and prepare us for a very tough OVC slate. There’s a lot of work to be done between now and November, but we’re excited.”

The OVC schedule continues to feature 16 games for all member schools. Morehead State opens the league slate with home affairs against SIU Edwardsville on Jan. 3 and Eastern Illinois on Jan. 5.

MSU, a member of the East Division, faces home-and-home scenarios with division opponents Belmont (Jan. 24 & 31), Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 12 & Feb. 9), Jacksonville State (Feb. 2 & 14), Tennessee State (Jan. 26 & Feb. 28) and Tennessee Tech (Feb. 16 & March 2).

The Eagles also battle West Division foes Austin Peay (Jan. 9), EIU, defending OVC-champion Murray State (Feb. 20), SIUE, Southeast Missouri (Jan. 17) and UT Martin (Jan. 19) once each.

“We have a solid mix of quality returning players and accomplished newcomers,” Woods added. “I’m confident we will play a fast-paced and entertaining brand of basketball. I call it organized chaos. We’re looking forward to seeing lots of Eagle fans throughout the season.”

Morehead State, which has played in the postseason three of the past four years, finished 18-15 overall and 10-6 in the conference in 2011-12. The Eagles have won 86 percent (50-8) of their home games over the past four seasons, including 91 percent (32-3) in league play.
