Morehead ushers in Woods Era wth Hysteria

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- More than 1,000 fans rolled into Johnson Arena on Thursday evening for a preview of the 2012-13 Morehead State men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The free event featured team scrimmages, a three-point shooting competition and dunk contest.

Senior Devon Atkinson won the three-point shootout, while classmate Milton Chavis was victorious in the dunk competition. Head Women’s Coach Tom Hodges gave fans a preview of his team, while Head Men’s Coach Sean Woods also addressed the crowd.

The men return six letterwinners from a season ago and have added 13 newcomers for the 2012-13 campaign. Junior Drew Kelly, who tallied 10+ points on 17 occasions last season, is Morehead State’s top returning scorer at 10.8 per contest.

The men, who finished third in the Ohio Valley Conference last season, have played in two of the past four NCAA Tournaments. The Eagles have also won 86 percent (50-8) of their home games during the stretch, including 91 percent (32-3) in league play.

“It was terrific to see so many Eagle fans tonight,” Woods said. “I want Johnson Arena to be the toughest place to play in the OVC this season. Our young men should be a lot of fun to watch. We have a nice mix of quality returnees and talented newcomers.”
