LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky horse racing regulators have approved a limited ban on race-day use of an anti-bleeding drug for the state's top races.
The Horse Racing Commission voted 7-5 Wednesday in favor of the proposal, which will now undergo legislative review. The proposal would eventually ban race-day use of the drug furosemide (fur-OH'-sih-myd) in graded or listed stakes races, including the Kentucky Derby.
Furosemide is marketed as Lasix and Salix and is the only medication allowed to be given to horses on race days in the U.S.
If approved, Kentucky would be the first state to take action against the drug, which is banned internationally.
The issue has been a divisive one in horse racing circles. A more sweeping proposed ban failed on a 7-7 commission vote in April.
