Several freshmen will play, Stoops hopes to redshirt Barker

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) After practice Friday afternoon, UK coach Mark Stoops said every freshman receiver and running back will play in the August 30 opener with UT Martin. His hope is to redshirt quarterback Drew Barker, but Stoops said Barker will need to be ready to play as a backup.

The freshmen receivers are Blake Bone, Dorian Baker and Garrett Johnson. The running backs are Stanley "Boom" Williams and Mikel Horton.

Stoops also said defensive tackle Matt Elam and cornerback Kendall Randolph will play, but the plan is to redshirt all other freshmen, including defensive end Lloyd Tubman and Barker.

Stoops said wide receiver Jeff Badet will miss the first two games of the season after suffering an eye injury. Receiver Alex Montgomery will also miss the opener. The status of wide out Demarco Robinson is still in question for disciplinary reasons.

UK offensive coordinator Neal Brown said quarterback Patrick Towles threw the ball well in Friday's practice and is becoming more comfortable.

Kentucky and UT-Martin open the season August 30 in Commonwealth Stadium. Kickoff will be at Noon on the SEC Network.
