LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – UK coach Mark Stoops said on Thursday that the current upgrades to Commonwealth Stadium aren’t the only changes he’s hoping to see there.
Stoops admitted disappointment that his team couldn’t practice more at the 41-year-old stadium. The coach said one answer would be to install a new artificial playing surface .
“It looks like we will go to (field) turf after this season,” Stoop said at the annual SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala. “We’ve been thinking about it.”
“Our grounds crew does a phenomenal job. They work their tails off and do an incredible job. But the fact is we cannot get on that field very much.”
Stoops said the construction upgrades to Commonwealth Stadium would require workers to put cranes on the field, which might damage the current grass surface.
UK currently uses synthetic turf at one of its outdoor practice fields and the playing surface inside the Nutter Field House.
