Tates Creek's Hairston grabs Mr. Baseball honor

Tates Creek senior shortstop Devin Hairston is the 2014 co-Mr. Baseball winner along with Kaleb Duckworth of Henderson County. Hairston, who has signed with Louisville, batted .408 with three home runs, 25 Rbi, and 42 runs scored, leading Tates Creek to consecutive 11th region baseball titles. In 2013, Hairston hit .460 with 35 runs and 26 RBI. Hairston was surprised to by the award. "Yes, it does. When you go out there and you play, you're really not thinking about all of the individual awards you can rack up. You're thinking about winning baseball games and winning championships. So, to be recognized like this is a surprise. I know I put in a lot of hard work. To be considered the best is, y'know, I always thought I was one of the best, but for other people to think that, that's kind of exciting and humbling at the same time."

Hairston is the eighth Lexington player to earn Mr. Baseball honors, but the first to eventually wear the jersey of the UofL Cardinals. Every other Mr. Baseball winner from Kentucky has played professional baseball, at some level, except for Ryne Combs (Bryan Station 2012). Combs will be a junior at UK this season.
