Karl Towns accepts Gatorade Athlete of the Year

UK freshman Karl Towns was excited and emotional accepting the Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year Award Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

Former Wildcat Brandon Knight, who won the honor in 2010 made the presentation to Towns. "Wow, wow, wow, wow wow." said the 7-footer from New Jersey. "Just like always, got to thank my parents. I got to thank my mother always cooking for me, I'm a big guy, I got to eat a lot."

Towns started to break down talking about his father. "Just got to thank my dad also. Growing up it was real hard, and you had to work real hard. And I just thank you for taking the time out to give me that orange basketball and the little time I had with you when you were working four jobs, just to be able to take care of me."

Towns averaged almost 21 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks playing at St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen, New Jersey.
