LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The UK Athletics Committee approved a new $104.4 million operating budget for the 2013-2014 school year. The budget includes $12.9 million in expenses for men's basketball and $12.6 million for football. The football budget increases by 3 million dollars from last year and will go towards coaches salaries.
UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said the budget increase is a matter of keeping up with the growing business of athletics.
"The cost of doing business in college athletics is not getting cheaper," said Barnhart. "You've got a lot of travel costs, recruiting costs and all those are a big part of the puzzle. The other big piece for us is the investment in our football program in terms of staffing. We've changed some of the salary structure of things we've done there, and as we go forward we begin to get into some of the design fazes of the stadium, which is really a major investment for us in football."
