UK defeats Alabama 7-1, advances in SEC

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Kentucky used a relentless offense and good pitching performances from A.J. Reed and Andrew Nelson to beat Alabama 7-1 on Tuesday in the Southeastern Conference tournament opening round.

The Wildcats (33-22) advance to face top overall seed Florida on Wednesday, when the tournament switches to a double-elimination format. Alabama (34-22) was eliminated, but will still likely earn a spot in the NCAA tournament when the bracket is announced next week.

The left-handed Reed (11-2) gave up one run over five innings to earn the win. Nelson threw four scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits to earn his first save of the year. Storm Wilson, Matt Reida and JaVon Shelby all had two hits for the Wildcats' offense.

Alabama used six pitchers, but few of them could slow the Kentucky offense. Nick Eicholtz (3-3) took the loss, giving up two runs in one inning.
