UK offense shines in scrimmage; QB decision could come tomorrow

The University of Kentucky football team on Saturday conducted its second scrimmage of the preseason. Head coach Joker Phillips was pleased overall with how his team performed.

The coach was particularly happy with his offense. On one series, Phillips said the Wildcats drove the ball 98 yards in 14 plays to score against the defense.

"That is hard to do, when a team has to drive the ball that far," Phillips said after the workout. "There weren't any huge plays in it, but we had some consistency. There were no penalties. There were no turnovers. There were no sacks. That's a good teaching point for us."

Defensive coordinator Rick Minter wasn't pleased with his team's play.

"Our strength up front is our defensive line, particularly the first unit. It was disappointing to see that we didn't match up," Minter said. It's always more than just those guys. There's second-level players, third-level players. Everybody took part."

Phillips also hinted that he could soon make a decision on a starting quarterback, possibly as early as Sunday. Sophomore Maxwell Smith and senior Morgan Newton are running 1-2 for that spot.

"The quarterbacks didn't turn the ball over, operated for the most part with efficiency. I'm looking forward to watching this tape and coming out of this thing with some kind of decision, hopefully tomorrow," he said.

"The sooner we can do it, the better off we'll be," stated Randy Sanders, the UK offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. "We need to sit down and talk. Whenever Joker's ready, I'm ready, because he's my boss. So we'll do it whenever he says let's do it."

Running back CoShik Williams suffered a sprained foot in the scrimmage. He will be evaluated on Sunday.
