Unbelievable Dream wins Appalachian

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sure Thing Stables’ homebred Unbelieveable Dream charged from the back of the pack under Joel Rosario to win the 25th running of the $100,000 Appalachian Stakes Presented by the Japan Racing Association (G3) for three-year-old fillies by a half-length over Overheard before a crowd of 11,551 on a warm, windy Thursday afternoon at Keeneland.

The victory was the fifth of the afternoon for Rosario, the meet’s leading rider. It marked the 16th time a rider has won five races on a Keeneland program and Rosario was the 11th to do it. The Keeneland record for wins in a day is six, accomplished three times.

The victory in the Appalachian was the first for Rosario and for trainer Barclay Tagg. Unbelievable Dream covered the mile on a firm turf course in 1:37.91.

Eden Prairie took command entering the backstretch after a quarter-mile in :23.33 and led the field through fractions of :47.39 and 1:13.42 while Rosario had Unbelievable Dream well off the pace.

Turning for home, Eden Prairie shook off a challenge from To My Valentine (FR) but was joined by Overheard at midstretch. Those two dueled to the finish only to be caught in the final strides by Unbelievable Dream.

Unbelievable Dream is a New York-bred daughter of Kitalpha out of the Stephen Got Even mare A Perfect Weekend. The victory was worth $60,000 and increased Unbelievable Dream’s earnings to $120,735 with a record of 4-3-0-0.

Sent off as the second choice in the field of eight, Unbelievable Dream returned $11.80, $5.60 and $4.60. Overheard, ridden by Rosie Napravnik, returned $8.40 and $6.40 with Eden Prairie finishing a head back in third under Brian Hernandez Jr. and returning $6.80 to show.

Odds-on favorite Watsdachances (IRE) finished fourth, another 1¾ lengths back, and was followed in order by Midnight Ballet, To My Valentine, Bethany Belle and Rusty Slipper.

Racing continues Friday with a 10-race program that features the 19th running of the $100,000 Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. First post time is 1:05 p.m. (ET) with the Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare going as the ninth race at 4:42 p.m.
