Union Rags, a Grade 1 winner at age 2 and a classic winner at age 3, will enter stud next year at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. Bred by Phyllis Wyeth and raced under her stable name of Chadds Ford Stable, Union Rags retired earlier this year with a record of 8 starts, 5 wins, one second and one third with earnings of $1,798,800.
Union Rags easily won the first three starts of his career at age two. After his winning track debut, he defeated his rivals by 7 1/4 lengths in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special. In just his third start he captured the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths. In his final start at two he ran just a head short in the Grade 1 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
In his first start at three, Union Rags was again impressive with his four-length victory in the Grade 2 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes. He then ran third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby. In his final start, UNION RAGS captured the historic Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, defeating such runners as Paynter and Dullahan.
Sired by Lane’s End’s late stallion Dixie Union, Union Rags is out of the winning mare Tempo by Gone West. His second dam is Grade 2 winner Terpsichorist.
“We are thrilled that Phyllis Wyeth has chosen to stand Union Rags at Lane’s End. He has all the makings of a top stallion. He was a brilliant racehorse with outstanding conformation and he has an exceptional pedigree,” said Will Farish.
A stud fee will be announced at a later date.
