LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Former Wildcat Eloy Vargas will join more than a half-dozen other former UK players in the NBA Summer League, which begins on Sunday.
Vargas tells SNY-TV that the Knicks need frontcourt help and have offered him a spot on their Las Vegas Summer League roster.
“I’m just thankful and lucky to have the opportunity,” Vargas, 24, told SNY.tv by text. “I’m really excited about the opportunity that this team is giving me to showcase my skill level with them and help me develop my game at the next level.
“They saw something in me when I was there trying out that no other team saw. I’m just thankful to be part of this team in the summer league. This is why I work so hard to get to this level.”
The 6-foot-11 native of the Dominican Republic had been playing with San Lazaro of the Santo Domingo League in the Dominican, where he was averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Vargas played on UK’s 2012 National Championship team.
Other Wildcats who currently are slated to participate, are: Darius Miller (Pelicans), DeAndre Liggins (Thunder), Daniel Orton (Thunder), Terrence Jones (Rockets), Marquis Teague (Bulls), Doron Lamb (Magic) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Bobcats).
