Whitaker plays key role on Dayton staff

QUEENS, NY (WKYT) - When the UK Hoops team plays the Dayton Flyers, in the second round of the NCAA tournament, the Cats will also face a former Kentucky All-State athlete. Former Harrison County star, Camryn Whitaker, is an assistant on the Flyers' staff. Whitaker is in her first season with Dayton after spending time as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University, her alma mater.

Dayton coach, Jim Jabir, had this to say on the Dayton basketball website, “Camryn is a very energetic coach who brings a wealth of experience to our program. We have had a strong history of great assistant coaches who have helped propel us to great heights and I know that Camryn will continue that tradition,” said Jabir. “She is respected for her efforts in growing programs everywhere she has coached. She is a welcome addition to our basketball family.”

Prior to WKU, Whitaker spent three seasons at Missouri State, where she was in charge of working with the Lady Bear guards, as well as overseeing the program's recruiting efforts. Before joining the staff at Missouri State in May 2008, Whitaker spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Austin Peay.

The Cynthiana, Ky. native was a standout point guard for the Lady Toppers from 2000-05. Whitaker started 117 of 126 games during her WKU career, helping the Lady Toppers to 97 victories and postseason appearances in each of her five seasons with the program.

Whitaker was a four-year letterman at Harrison County, playing for her father Mac Whitaker. The Whitakers captured the 2000 10th region title with the Thorobreds.
