Wicked Strong hopefully maturing

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Hall of fame trainer Jimmie Jerkens will be sending Wicked Strong to the post in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Wicked Strong won the Wood Memorial in New York coming off two poor performances at Gullfstream Park in Florida. The 3-year old was uncomfortable behind the gate, in the gate and broke poorly.

His closing style could be a big benefit with all the speed in Saturday's race and Jerkens hopes hes matured at the right time. So far hes looked good at Churchill Downs. "Yeah he has, I've been really happy with that." said Jerkens. "I really didn't know what to expect. I thought he was good and strong leaving New York and I thought if he just carried over he'd be o.k. I didn't really think he'd come here and fall apart. It would have surprised me if he did because he just acted like he started to grow up and be a big boy about things and he has been, hes been good here."

The winner of the Wood Memorial hasn't finished in the money in the Derby in ten years.
