Wildcat Red takes Fountain of Youth

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Wildcat Red edged General a Rod by a head Saturday in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park after they battled for the lead almost the entire race.

Top Billing, the 2-1 favorite, finished third by two lengths in the 1 1/16 mile race for 3-year-olds.

Wildcat Red, at 9-2, was ridden by Luis Saez and won in 1:41.85. He is trained by Jose Garoffalo.

Wildcat Red paid $11.00. $5.00 and $3.40.

He earned 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby, and is virtually assured a spot in the race on May 3 at Churchill Downs. General a Rod earned 20 points, which could be enough for one of the 20 Kentucky Derby spots.
