LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Morehead State coach Sean Woods said Monday his comments on a conference call earlier in the day, just show the passion and love he has for the University of Kentucky. Woods played under Rick Pitino from 1990-1992 and became one of the "unforgettables."
On the conference call, Woods said he didn't like the "vibe" he got from UK players at the recent Big Blue Cares Telethon at WKYT. "They didn't seem like Kentucky basketball players to me." Woods continued, "I knew about every player, I knew about everything, almost everything history wise as far as the University of Kentucky and these kids don't, that's just the way it is."
Woods said he was just being honest, and it's not anyone's fault, It's just the way society is now. Morehead State plays Kentucky Wednesday night in Rupp Arena.
Woods gave WKYT statement late Monday afternoon. "I love my alma mater, the fans and coach Calipari and my comments earlier today were in no way meant to be personal toward anybody. The kids that are playing at UK, or Morehead, or any other school today don't know what happened in their programs more than 5 years ago, if that. I wish it were different but I was just trying to state how things have changed since I played. I'm pulling for Kentucky every time they take the court, except for Wednesday night when I bring my MSU Eagles to Rupp. And no active D-I coach in college basketball has done more for me than coach Calipari."
Tipoff for the UK-Morehead State game will be 7:00pm on FOX Sport South. The game will be televised on a delayed basis at 11:35pm on WKYT.
