Young dunk nominated for GEICO Play of the Year

CHICAGO – Kentucky freshman guard James Young’s one-handed slam vs. Belmont on Dec. 21st is nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced today.

Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college basketball plays will be nominated as the GEICO Play of the Year. Each week’s winner will be determined by fan voting through the official Facebook page ( The eight finalists will compete in a week-long competition to determine the GEICO Play of the Year. The winner will be announced during the GEICO Best of College Basketball special which airs March 29 at 2 P.M. ET on CBS.
With under 2:20 in the second half against Belmont, Aaron Harrison had a very nice alley-oop pass to teammate James Young who slammed it down, putting Kentucky up 85-73. The game ended in a Wildcats 93-80 victory over the Bruins.

Young’s one-handed slam is competing against three other plays from week five, including a 70-foot buzzer beater by Buffalo State’s Bradley Doyley, an alley-oop two-handed slam by Florida’s Casey Prather and a posterizing dunk by Southern Mississippi’s Michael Craig.
