LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK quarterbacks Jalen Whitlow and Patrick Towles may never have imagined the situation they're in as their freshman season nears an end. Whitlow has started the last four games and has taken the majority of the snaps. Towles has had to come back from a high ankle sprain after thinking he would be redshirted.
Sophomore Max Smith was completing almost 69 percent of his passes when he went down with an injury in the first quarter against South Carolina. Whitlow's completed just 47 percent, while Towles, in limited action has only thrown the ball ten times.
Despite the situation with three games left in the season, Whitlow said he's having fun. "Oh yeah, oh yeah. I'm having fun. Having fun playing football, I'm having fun with these guys, the seniors, learning, I'm having fun."
Towles has played in only two games but he believes he's making progress. "It's not like I was struggling and i didn't know why I was struggling. So ya know, I knew the answer to why I was struggling and I'm working on fixing it this week, and hopefully Saturday it's going to be better.
Whitlow will start again Saturday as the Cats try to snap a seven game losing streak against Vanderbilt. He says it's different than anything hes been through before. "Just adapt to it, study, watch film, and come out here and try to practice good, go into the game focused and play your best."
Saturday's game is scheduled for noon at Commonwealth Stadium and will be televised by ESPNU. Vanderbilt is a seven point favorite.
